Self Awareness and Reverse Betting
Knowing your strengths and acting upon them sound like common sense no? However, too many of us decide to work harder on our weaknesses rather the stuff we’re already good at. Taking something good and making it great is way more convenient and achievable than taking something broken and making it good. This is where self-awareness comes into play. One person I always tell people to check out is Gary Vaynerchuk and this dude preaches self-awareness all the time. The analogy he uses is number 76 in Facebook is doing way better than number 1 in thousands of other companies and that’s because number 76 realized he was not a number 1. Take all the things in your life that you’re good at and just act upon them. Some of you may think you’re not good at anything but that’s not true. There has to be one thing that you’re decent in. For my case, my greatest strength is dealing with people. I have a skill where I can make people feel better about themselves and give them some guidance. My main objective for the next couple years of my life should be just mastering my communication skills weather that’s oral or written. Find things your good at and just work on those things with drive and dedication. You’ll eventually be great.
The power of reverse betting is unreal. Recently, a fitness coach in NYC called Mike Vacanti introduced this idea to me and the results are crazy. At the start of a given week, write down all your goals for the week. You should make this list crazy. Overload yourself with things you need to get done and want to get done. Then simply bet on yourself. For example, Mike bet on himself saying if he didn’t accomplish his goals by the end of the week, he would have to donate 1,000 dollars to the IRS. The bet you place on yourself has to be absurd. Nobody in his or her right mind would want to donate money to the IRS. However, if the bet was donating 1,000 dollars to a charity, you may not feel the sense of urgency of accomplishing your goals because money towards a charity is a good thing and something you can live with.
Being self-aware is a simple concept and one that can change your life but most of us don’t want to be self-aware because we value the fame of being number 1 more than the concept of being a great number 76. If you’re reading this, you’re probably an adult or entering adulthood and now is the time to work on your strengths rather wasting years making something you suck at mediocre. It aint easy hustlin so do a reverse bet this week and see how much more you get done.
